The Rock Pool Shawl was inspired by a pool that I stood gazing into at Bossiney Cove in North
Cornwall. The cove is a tidal beach only accessible at low tide, and within the pattern I have
designed the stitches to mimic the ripples not only in the waves, but also in the sand, which are
revealed when the sea draws out, uncovering the beach at the bottom of the cliffs. The lace
stitches within the wave and seagrass sections give the shawl a wonderful drape, and are
representative of the fluidity of the environment of the rock pools found within the cove. The final
section is a slightly more solid section of ‘rock’. Without losing the drape that the lace sections
offer, the final layer shows the stability that a rock pool offers, and gives the shawl a beautiful
edge.

I created The Rock Pool Shawl in collaboration with Hannah at The Camel’s Yarn, as her dyes
give the shawl the look of a watercolour picture of the Cornish coast. The colours were chosen
to help tell the story of these amazing natural environments, as well as to offer you the most
beautiful shawl – one that will be well worn and much enjoyed for years to come.
This shawl is a fantastic introduction to lace work; it allows you to enjoy a delicate project
without having to fight with a lot of complicated techniques.
